Research Interests

Bernadett Csurgó, PhD is a senior research fellow at the Institute for Sociology, Centre for Social Sciences. She leads the Research Centre for Social Ecology and Climate Change. She earned her PhD on sociology at the Eötvös Loránd University in 2011. Her main research area is rural sociology. She focuses in her research and publications on rural cultural heritage and tourism, rural-urban relationships, rural communities and rural women. She has recently engaged in work on sustainable consumption and production and has investigated sustainability in the context of  rural-urban relationships. She is the principal investigator of a Hungarian NRDI FUND project entitled Sustainable consumption patterns, behavioral strategies and knowledge use in the Hungarian society. A social scientific analysis of  sustainable food and energy consumption. She has worked as participant in several  European projects (EU FP 5 RURBAN, EU FP 6 CORASON, EU FP7 GILDED, H2020 COURAGE, H2020 RURALIZATION). Her research projects were also supported by János Bolyai Research Scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She has published several Hungarian and English book chapters and journal articles in journals such as Sociologia Ruralis, Journal of Rural Studies and Eastern European Countryside. Her monography on rural-urban relationships (Vidéken lakni és vidéken élni, Argumentum-Centre for Social Sciences of HAS) had been published in 2013. She is an editor of socio.hu-Social Science Review journal and member of the European Society for Rural Sociology and the Hungarian Sociological Association. She participates in the Sociology Committee of the IXth Division of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in the Social Sciences Jury of the NRDI OTKA. She is a visiting lecturer at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, at ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences and at The Reformed Theological Academy of Sárospatak. She is also reporter at the Centre for Social Sciences’s science podcast.
